Arnica, belonging to the Asteraceae family, is a perennial herbaceous genus native to European and Siberian mountains and cultivated in North America. The genus name is derived from the Greek word “arni,” meaning lamb, referencing its soft, hairy leaves. Arnica essential oil is extracted from its flower heads through steam distillation or CO2 extraction, containing fatty acids like palmitic and linoleic, along with thymol, known for its antibacterial properties. Scientific studies have well-established the antibacterial activity of thymol present in arnica essential oil.
